Defect Description

Mack Trucks, Inc. (Mack) is recalling certain model year 2014 CXU tractor trailers manufactured June 21, 2013, through October 4, 2013 and equipped with an automatic over-speed protection system. In the affected vehicles, the protection system, designed to monitor diesel engine speed and shutdown the engine should it rev excessively, may be wired incorrectly and may not operate as designed.

Consequence / Hazard

Without a system to control the engine speed, if airborne hydrocarbons (combustible vapors) enter through the air intake, excessive engine speed may result in a catastrophic engine failure and/or engine fire.

Proposed Solution

Mack will notify owners, and dealers will correct the system wiring, free of charge. The recall began on February 20, 2014. Owners may contact Mack Trucks at 1-336-393-2000. Mack's number for this recall is SC0374.
